Would you want to be reborn in your country? A research organization macromill embrain recently conducted a study asking 1,000 Koreans between the ages of 19 and 59 this question; the results were pretty depressing.
According to macromill embrain, only 3 out of every 10 people surveyed wanted to be reborn in Korea. Percentage-wise, while 30.2% of participants said they want to be reborn in Korea, 57.9% said they didn't, and the remaining 11.9% said they didn't know. The research found that people in their 20s to 40s were especially opposed with around 60% from each age group against being reborn in Korea.
76.7% of participants who answered that they did not want to live in Korea again said it was mainly due to overworking and they "wanted to live in a country where they had more free time." According to the OECD, South Korea is one of the hardest working countries in the world. 62.9% said it was because they "wanted to live in a country with a good welfare system." And finally, 61.7% said it was because they "wanted to leave this extremely fierce, competitive society."
Netizens were mostly split with the results, with top comments ranging from serious to sarcastic. They read: "In my life, I've seen a lot of very discontent people. We're one of the top countries in the world. If you yourself say we're small, then of course you'd feel that way. People say that getting a job here is difficult but it's like that regardless of the nation; and yet there are still a lot of people whining that Korea is like shit," "We are a country with a corrupt, lenient court.... After all our past ancestors and independence activists cleaned up our country for us.... The people who have everything work hard, trample over the poor, and even if they commit an evil deed, they carry on.... What kind of country is this?" and, "If you're reborn, you have the lucky chance to be reborn in some third world country, good luck with that!"
