It is reported that on November 3, after roll call for bedtime had concluded, Moon and his four fellow soldiers attacked Joo. While Moon used judo to subdue Joo, the other four took off Joo's pants and touched his genitals.
It is also believed that Moon and the four soldiers have been harassing Joo in other ways ever since last March by lighting pieces of Joo's hair on fire with a lighter and hitting him on the shoulder or chest numerous times. Moon and the soldiers would also steal from Joo's monthly salary card. Moon and the four soldiers' abuse of Joo was reported to the authorities anonymously.
Moon and the other four are facing criminal charges of sexual and physical assault and are currently being investigated. During the initial investigation, Moon and his four fellow soldiers are reported to have said, "We were joking around, and because Corporal Joo stayed still we thought it was fine."
Joo's parents believe that it's possible Joo had to endure both physical and sexual abuse ever since his enlistment into the army. The authorities plan on punishing Moon and the other four severely once the investigation is concluded.
Netizens have expressed concern with the amount of bullying and abuse occurring in the military barracks, with comments saying, "Whether it's inside or outside [the army], there are quite a lot of thoughtless people, seriously," and, "We need to change our education. Rather than trampling all over others, we should educate people on how to better take care of each other."
