HIGH SCHOOL: LOVE ON, EPISODE 10
The long-awaited kiss
Recap
Seul Bi figures out that it was Sunbae that made the flower pot fly while Woo Hyun thinks it's a ghost. Sung Yeol's father and step mom try to figure out how to save the shop. Woo Hyun snaps out of his funk. At school, Chun Shik admits that he planted the phone in Seul Bi's handbag, Young Eun rats out Ye Na, and the other students won't let Ye Na play in any reindeer games because of this. Chun Shik also stands up to the bullies, which causes the other students in the class to get harassed. At the library, Sunbae makes books spill from their shelves onto Woo Hyun and our angel. Seul Bi confronts Sunbae and his replies indicate a jealous streak. Unknown to either, Woo Hyun witnesses their conversation and finally realizes that she is an angel. He learns that if he keeps quiet about that, she can stay on earth. The President of the Earth Angels, Choi Sung Go, the first angel to become human, also chastises Sunbae. Sung Go was also the ice cream man, the man with school transfer documents, the homeless man, et al in earlier episodes, who suspiciously seemed like he was influencing events.
An unintended side effect of spending the night...
Sung Yeol and Seul Bi come across Ye Na being bullied by Young Eun and stop the incident before it gets violent. Sung Yeol scolds her for it, then walks off, leaving a smitten Young Eun in tears. At home, Sung Yeol's father tells him they need to congratulate his real mother on her remarriage, which causes him to run off and he spends the night in Woo Hyun's room. Seul Bi helps Sung Yeol recover from heartburn and receives a declaration of love in return. The next day, they head to the sauna and run into Sung Yeol's family, finally learning that their ethics teacher is Sung Yeol's mom. Then, in a transitional moment, Woo Hyun finally kisses Seul Bi...
Sung Yeol: "I will wait for you."
My Take
So, how about that Seul Bi/Woo Hyun kiss? We're halfway through the series, it's obvious there's a love triangle, so at last we get a kiss. Here's the kicker: is Sung Yeol the leading man or is he the second lead? It's obvious he's interested, they've been on several dates, and they have a good time together. She helps him forget his problems, and he shows her love and affection and kindness. But Woo Hyun is ever-present -- she lives with him and works alongside him in the shop. They do things that couples do (and his friend mentions that this episode). My guess is the writers will continue to tease us up until the end.
Young Eun is really high-ranking on my blacklist. Not only was she cruel to Seul Bi and instrumental in getting her blamed for the cellphone incident but now she also inexplicably gets her friend in trouble and bullies her later on. Did she think that would endear her to Sung Yeol? I think I vaguely knew she was interested in him, but we really didn't see too much of that until this episode. Her character is unfortunately stereotypical, though -- tough exterior, soft interior. We haven't seen that a lot, have we?
Woo Hyun protects Seul Bi from falling books
Sung Yeol and Woo Hyun really don't like their families, yet they continue to rely on them and cling to them. It's almost toxic, except that it's family. Woo Hyun can't contact his dad or his mom, Sung Yeol can't stand his stepmom and is angry at his real mother. I think in some ways, this serves to bring the boys closer together.
And the winner of the Princess Leia lookalike contest is...
So here's to no more preemptions. This drama doesn't air often enough as it is, so it's pretty bad when KBS 2TV pulls it to air something else. I am kind of glad that Korean drama doesn't seem to work like American TV where if something doesn't immediately click with audiences, it's pulled off air after 3 episodes. I look forward to this one every week, though the special effects in this one were a bit lacking. :( Will Sung Yeol get a chance with Seul Bi? And is he meant to be with her or is it Woo Hyun who is the romantic lead? Who do you want to see together? Let me know in the comments below.
