A biopsy is a kind of surgery in which a medical personnel extracts sample cells or tissues from a living subject in order to determine the presence of a disease. Professor Kim has been directing a research team in a college lab to conduct these biopsies on healthy students in order to aid his study of athletic performance.
Around 200 people have been subject to these illegal biopsies, half of them Korean National Sports University students. One student claims that he was told by Professor Kim that he would be granted an 'A' grade if he participated as a subject. During the biopsy, the professor's research team cut a hole in the student's abdomen and extracted muscle tissue. Afterwards, the student expressed that he experienced side effects, and that as a result, he could no longer play sports.
Specialists are concerned that these illegal surgeries could have spawned even more cases of infection and injury that have yet to be reported as it is highly dangerous to conduct a biopsy without professional medical personnel to supervise.
Professor Kim's research team had been told that they were allowed to perform these surgeries while Professor Kim claims that he had not known his actions were illegal, either. In the Korean National Sports University alone, it's suspected that 30 other professors and graduate students were involved in directing these illegal surgeries since the early 2000s.
