HIGH SCHOOL: LOVE ON, EPISODE 9
Seul Bi tries to console Woo Hyun
RECAP
Seul Bi walks away with Sunbae and at the last minute, stops and tells him she's not going back. She takes Woo Hyun back to the shop, but all he does is sleep. Later that night, Seul Bi talks to Sunbae, asking to see Grandma one more time. He says it's beyond his power. Sung Yeol sees her talking to apparently thin air and asks her who she was talking to. Obviously, she tells him nothing. Friends visit the shop the next morning, but nothing rouses Woo Hyun. Sung Yeol comes by; he and Seul Bi look at recipes, prepare food together, and share a moment. Then two loan sharks burst into the shop and start ransacking the place. Apparently Woo Hyun's father used the shop as collateral for a high-interest loan, but didn't pay it back. They couldn't find him, so they're taking the shop. Seul Bi bites one, and they end up at the police station.
The floating flowerpot, ready to bean Woo Hyun.
Sung Yeol's father dismisses the kids, and tells the men that the interest on the contract they have is illegal. Sung Yeol offers his tuition savings to help pay off the debt. Seul Bi takes on a series of part-time jobs to help out. When she gets the money, she finds the loan sharks, but they scatter the cash on the street and make crude suggestions as to how a pretty girl might make money. Woo Hyun berates Seul Bi through all of this, telling her to go away, telling her it's useless. Sung Yeol has enough of this and loudly tells Woo Hyun to leave her alone. Later, as Woo Hyun and our angel again fight about the debt, a flowerpot mysteriously dislodges itself, rises, and positions itself directly above Woo Hyun's head, complete with mystical sound effects. Seul Bi sees it just in time to save him from the plummeting pot...
The loan sharks
MY TAKE
Everything's falling apart in this episode so crazily. Grandma's dead, they're losing the shop, the loan sharks are unreasonable, the homeroom teacher takes a leave of absence, no one can get ahold of Woo Hyun's father, and Woo Hyun is depressed. Can it get any worse? Yes, yes it can. Someone or something may be trying to kill Woo Hyun. How did the flowerpot start floating by itself? Seul Bi apparently has been losing her powers bit by bit, and so I'm not sure it's her. Besides that, she saves him from it. It does have those strange sound effects, so it's something supernatural.
By far the brightest part of this episode is Seul Bi. She just seems to come across as nothing less than bubbly and bright in contrast to Sung Yeol's reserved concern and Woo Hyun's depressed funk. She obviously cares deeply for Woo Hyun and hates to see him down. She doesn't seem to really lose her cool, either, which is another sweet thing about her. I feel bad for Woo Hyun, though. His grandmother was his whole world. The actor puts in a great grieving performance, though. Sometimes he screams, other times he weeps while he's talking about his Grandma.
Sung Yeol and Seul Bi looking up recipes
We also see Chun Shik getting roughed up by the bullies at school. Apparently he was going to admit to everything and implicate everyone, so he earns a beating. Young Eun just watches callously, almost approvingly. Ye Na doesn't seem to appreciate this, and her friend's warning about the price of betrayal is rather chilling. Ye Na appears to be redeemable, and some things have happened to rattle her confidence while hazing our angel. I'm hoping that we'll see her standing up for Seul Bi soon.
Seul Bi finds a lost dog and uses the reward to help pay the debt
So, will they lose the shop or will something else happen to fix that? Like Woo Hyun's father riding in to save the day. Will Woo Hyun snap out of his depression? And what will it take to do that? Why did the flowerpot try to brain Woo Hyun? Is it the universe's way of trying to bump him off since he was supposed to be dead in the first place? Or is it Sunbae, trying to remove the reasons why Seul Bi stayed on earth as a mortal? He didn't look happy when she left.
I have to imagine all these questions will be answered eventually. I just hate having to wait a week to find out.
