HIGH SCHOOL: LOVE ON EPISODE 8
It's been a week. This drama didn't air on KBS 2TV last week, so there was nothing to review, which was a disappointment!
Ji Hye comforting Sung Yeol
Recap:
Seul Bi activates the black book with pyrotechnic results, and Sunbae appears and lets her know that she swore on the book, so she will be an angel once more. The process will take a week, so she can set her affairs in order before she leaves. She apologizes to the class for stealing despite the fact that she was innocent. Classmate Da Yool tells the homeroom teacher about the bullying that he had been clueless about. This causes him to be so despondent that he does not even notice the pretty teacher he's had his eye on all this time. Coach tells him that's the way it is, but the homeroom teacher has been blind to it.
Grandma is finishing up what she needs to do, as well, and promptly passes away afterward. In the midst of all this, Seul Bi breaks the news that she must go away, as well. Woo Hyun doesn't take it well at all and just keeps telling her to go. His friends and teachers attend the funeral, including Woo Hyun's mother, who is hailed by a contemporary of Grandma's. She denies that she is Woo Hyun's mother, and her husband witnesses the interaction. Seul Bi tells Sunbae that when she is an angel once more, she will let humans get their affairs in order before she escorts their spirits away. She will give them last words and goodbyes. She has experienced the heartache for herself and understands what it is like. She lets Sunbae escort her while Woo Hyun weeps for he is truly alone.
Gathering around Grandma
My take:
I knew it. I was hoping for a different resolution, but I guess that was not to be. Grandma is dead, Seul Bi's headed back to heaven, and Woo Hyun's future is uncertain. The store is sold. Grandma left him and Seul Bi money to pay for housing and school and such, but that's gotta be hard. Since the series is not even halfway over, I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Seul Bi. But since she activated the book, how is it possible for her not to be an angel now?
Which brings me to my next point. The guy who used to be an angel hasn't popped up recently. I would think that would be the guy to talk to about all this. Since he is rather chameleon-like, have him show up as an old man who needs help carrying something or to be escorted to a park, and then sit down with him to talk it out. Seems like he's been doing it longer than Seul Bi, so I could well imagine that he'd have some useful advice. Never mind the fact that he is crazy as a loon. But, hey...they didn't consult me.
Seul Bi glances back as she's led away by Sunbae
The funeral was interesting. I'm still a little surprised that Sung Yeol's father didn't question his new wife more. After all, he witnessed a scene where some ahjumma said she was positive that Ji Hye was Woo Hyun's mother. And she was very quick to deflect his line of questioning when he was mulling over the possibility of finding Woo Hyun's mother. Why do characters in dramas never quite understand deflection? Ji Hye seemed a bit frantic when she shot down her husband's idea. That would have been suspicious to me.
Sung Yeol gets the disturbing news at the funeral that his mother is remarrying. He's rather upset -- I think he was hoping that his father and she would reconcile. Ji Hye shifts into comforting adult mode, stroking his hand and trying to dig up some gem of a statement that might make him feel better. I thought it was a nice moment, and she had tears in her eyes as she talked, making me think that it wasn't just about Sung Yeol's mother, but her actions as well. It was a touching scene, and it stood out in my mind. The actors were in fine form there.
A picnic for the three of them
The fact that this airs just once a week is killing me. I love how they build to a climax and leave you hanging, but it's hard to wait a week (or in this last case, TWO weeks). It may be a case of gauging interest, as well. If they air a show twice a week, that makes it that much less interesting, because you've already found out some more of what's going on and resolved one cliffhanger. Once a week, and your viewers are hungry for more. I don't know. I think it's stirred up more resentment than anything else, especially when the show doesn't air for one week. Ah well. I still like it. And I hope you guys do, too.
