These days rapping is not exclusive to males. There has been a sharp incline in the number of female rappers that have dominated the game. Let's take a look at which idol group members have established a name for themselves as top rappers in K-pop!
-----
AOA Jimin
AOA's Jimin was the one member that really stood out to me when I first heard of the group during their "Miniskirt" promotions. She has a particular, unique sass in her voice when she raps--it's a harsh sound yet feminine at the same time. She proves that talent and competition is growing stronger for the new wave of rappers in idol groups. I'm looking forward to seeing her take a leading role in the new generation of girl groups.
SISTAR Bora
SISTAR's Bora may be the visual of the group (this is debatable, but she is in my opinion nonetheless), but she's more than just a pretty face. Her sound is no means the type you would find in underground rap battles, but deserves a spot on this list. She has a calm sound when she raps; she relays emotion almost as if she is telling a story (similar reason as to why I love B2ST Junhyung's style). She is not flashy, but manages to make an impact on every SISTAR song with her soothing voice.
Wonder Girls Yubin
Yubin's solo parts have always been my favorite part of Wonder Girls songs. She has quite possibly the lowest voice I've heard from a female rapper, but it works well for her. It's a stark contrast to her girly image (it's cool to see a girl rapping while wearing a headband and skirt). Whether she's rapping in Korean or English (her rap in "Like Money" is my favorite part, beating out Akon's rap), she kills it. Her voice adds a nice undertone sound to all Wonder Girls songs.
Brown Eyed Girls Miryo
Brown Eyed Girls is basically an OG girl group--they have been consistently topping charts for a while now. Throughout the years, we've been exposed to a lot of Miryo and despite her widespread popularity, I still feel like she's underrated. She has it all--from her freestyle to her smooth flow in her rap solos in BEG songs; she's always flawless. The fact that she's beautifully feminine at the same time is just the icing on the cake.
EXID LE
EXID is still a relatively new group, but LE has managed to prove that she is one of the top female rappers on the game; her name is thrown out there on every list that mentions K-Pop rappers. As an underground rapper (under the name Elly) prior to her debut in an idol group, she has clearly not lost her sound in order to conform to K-Pop norms. When I first heard LE, her voice reminded me of HyunA--she has a very feminine, high sound. The confidence and swag she radiates perfectly contrasts to her voice.
SECRET Hana
Whether she's spitting raps in cute songs, SECRET Hana's adaptable rapping style is never out of place and always on point. For example, her freestyle video to their track, "Madonna," and their track, "Shy Boy," are completely different images, yet they both seem to suit her style all the same. She adds the perfect amount of chic to her groups' feminine image and proves that it's not only guys that can spit freestyle raps.
2NE1 CL
Since her first line in 2NE1's debut track, "Fire," CL established that she was going to take over the rap game: "I go by the name of CL, it's been a long time coming, but we're here now." Since then, she's had an extremely successful career both with 2NE1 and as a solo artist. Her fierce rap flow and aura led her not only dominate the K-Pop scene but also collaborate with top artists and producers, such as will.i.am and Diplo. This bad female is making a splash worldwide, and she's not stopping anytime soon.
And that rounds out my top 7! Did your favorite idol rapper make the list? Did I miss anyone? Comment below!
And of course, I can't have an article about female rappers without mentioning the OOG female rapper, Yoon Mi Rae. Although she's not a part of an idol group, she definitely deserves a mention. So, here's an extra special treat:
