TRIANGLE EPISODE 5
Triangle. Three men. One town. Tons of corruption.
Young Dal gets all his ill-gotten money taken away by Chairman Go, but then Go offers to bankroll his new idea, a gangster training camp, through Boss Min (who was the one who shut down Madame Jang's casino last episode). Our youngest brother, Yang Ha, starts as a dealer trainee alongside Jung Hee. Apparently his father was serious when he said he needed to learn the business from the ground up. Yang Ha pays off Jung Hee's debt to Madame Jang in full, but I have a feeling Madame Jang is not done with her yet. Meanwhile Dong Soo aggressively pursues Chairman Go's holdings, acquiring a warrant to search and seize, but is quickly shut down by the Chief of Police, who also happens to be (A) his foster father, (B) Shin Hye's father, and (C) Director Hyun's father-in-law, since Hyun is married to Shin Hye. Chairman Go makes the call to Director Hyun, who then calls his father-in-law to stop Dong Soo. Confused yet?
It almost seems like Chairman Go's party this time around. Just about everything in this episode revolves around ol' skunkhead in some way. In yet another subplot, Chairman Yoon, Yang Ha's father, won't let Chairman Go invest in the new casino/resort being erected. Through flashback, we see that Chairman Go was hired by Chairman Yoon years ago to "take care of" the leader of the mining strike, who just happens to be the father of our trio of brothers. Sounds like the mining accident that Dad was supposed to have died in was hardly an accident.
Dong Soo takes a perverse pleasure in finding anything to nail Chairman Go. The goofy grin he sports alongside the warrant speaks volumes. However, he does not like the way he's stopped at all. Apparently Dong Joo views it as corruption on Chairman Go's part, like Chairman Go literally screwed over a good and decent man like the Chief. But it didn't seem like corruption, it just seemed like a son-in-law calling in a favor.
Dong Soo's relationship with Shin Hye is also strange too. To the best of my knowledge, therapists don't call their clients up to share a meal, like they do here and have in past episodes. And the confession she makes to him about her deteriorating relationship with her hubby as well as the "one who got away" makes it seems like she's in love with him. They've hinted about it more than once. Like I said, the show's called "Triangle". Why don't we have at least a romance?
Enter Jung Hee for that hoped-for triangle. She seems to be paired up with Yang Ha a lot. He acts quite confident around her, and seems to be more strong-willed and a lot more playful this episode. Maybe a humbling experience from starting near the bottom will be good for him. Young Dal keeps bumping into Jung Hee, but their interactions are very brief. I think I detect a little bit of awkwardness in these scenes, almost like "She's cute, what do I say?"
Well, what can I say? This show's pace varies between slow and breakneck. This episode falls somewhere in the middle, and it was interesting to watch all the deals going on, and I was grateful to have environments that were somewhat less seedy. If I spend too much time watching places like that, then what I mostly feel is not excited, rather it's the feeling that I need a shower. So, we have a gangster training camp, a cop with a vendetta, apparently untouchable crime bosses, and a millionaire expert player who is now a dealer. Plus a zillion different ways that all these people are connected. Here's my question: are they likely to find out that they are brothers, and how does this happen? Since we're only 5 episodes in out of 24, I guess we'll be waiting a while to answer this.
