AOA's newest music video 'Miniskirt' was uploaded on the 15th via the group's official YouTube channel. The song has so far gained nearly 900,000 views which will undoubtedly continue to climb. This is considering how popular their previous video releases have been, each one of them surpassing the one million mark.
The song is a stick-in-your-head, catchy, dance pop song with hints of swing and jazz mixed in. I probably would have enjoyed the song more if it had not been for all the bum-shaking, bum-rubbing, bum-sashaying, bums… just all up in my face. It is clear the video is supposed to ooze this sexy, bodacious vibe and it does, but couldn't the producers conjure up a classier theme to deliver the song? I felt almost pervy as I was literally forced to concentrate with all my might at the ends of these girls' skirts which by the way, stopped barely below their private areas.
Furthermore there actually appeared to be two concepts meshed haphazardly within the video transitioning quite suddenly from innocent to sexy then back to innocent then sexy again. The 'innocent' scenes I speak of are the bedroom scenes (I already know what you are thinking so get your mind out the gutter) where the girls don mostly white, bright, and of course seductive clothing practically shimmering with effervescence. I am conjecturing the attire is representative of purity which in my opinion contrasts rather jarringly with the theme of sexiness. Maybe the disparity between the two concepts were intentionally interwoven by the director but I guess we will never know for sure. What I do know is that those shorts and skirts were cut entirely too short for me to contemplate the complex mechanisms of K-Pop music video motifs.
But then it hit me. The realization that this is the world of K-Pop. Hence young, healthy, voluptuous girls shimmying their body parts at you is far from novel. Additionally nothing really has to make complete, logical sense. That is the beauty of K-Pop. As long as there are colorful outfits, complicated dance moves (that you will inevitably try to emulate in the mirror but stop as soon as you realize how ungainly and graceless you look compared to your unnies) and a little bit of skin involved, fans will support you in all their endearing vigor. In fact, the 'sexy' concept is almost as commonplace amongst girl groups in Korea as Baptists being baptized in the spheres of religion. Terrible analogies aside, thanks to the conspicuous emphasis on the girls' derrieres the dance was at least memorable. I personally thought the part where the members are aligned horizontally, strategically placed so their hands would be placed right on the butt cheeks of each other, was a pretty clever move.
So thanks AoA, for making me feel like a dirty ol' perv (byuntae) what with your bum-rubbing, risqué choreography. Also thanks for the free staring contest that I got to engage in with the members of your lovely group whilst immersing myself in your video. Those doe-eyes are surely enough to steal any unwitting man's heart. Then proceed to break it by beating you in an EPIC STARING CONTEST STAND OFF.
Regarding my sentiment on the over-sexualized concept, maybe I am just being a little too conservative. But that's just me. I am sure many of you hold different thoughts on AoA's new video. Plus I feel that if the group was aiming for sexy, they should have focused on sexy alone. I was confused when the video apparently attempted to infuse sexy and innocent together, leaving the video suffering from an identity crisis. I admire the unapologetic confidence and sass with which the girls dance in the video, however. They played their roles well given that the video had little direction. Obviously they are not shy about embracing their sexuality and gaining recognition through it. Anybody else got opinions about the music video? Love it, hate it, mediocre? Share your thoughts below!
