1999, a different time, a different landscape. It was before social media, when most people communicated over instant messaging and community forums. A time when MTV actually played music videos.
I remember turning to MTV one afternoon in 1999 and seeing the music video for "Galaxies" by the Mountain Brothers. It was a moment of slight jubilation as it was the first time that I can recall seeing an Asian face on the channel. Not only that, CHOPS, Peril-L, and Styles were beasts on the mic. Shortly after the video aired, I went on aznraps, saehoon, what have you and remember seeing a similar sentiment being felt by the Asian American community. It was a bit short lived as eventually, Mountain Brothers went their separate ways but CHOPS (Scott Jung) became a beastly producer.
The years may have gone by but it's still rare to see an Asian face on mainstream media or a talented Asian artist signed with a major label. So with this in mind, CHOPS started a Kickstarter project "Strength in Numbers", an album where he wants to make a statement, recruiting the top notch Asian emcee's from all across the globe.
For this project, he features Korean hip hop royalty Tiger JK and Yoon Mi Rae for a new song called "Turn It Up." Studio APA revealed the MV teaser for this song on YouTube, showcasing a lot of brilliant and colorful illustrations. Scott Jung once again showing his chops on the production. The teaser is unfortunately short, but it features wonderful animations and cool effects that leave you wanting more.
