Disappointingly, we had a short supply of true summer songs in 2013, so we owe it to T-ara, Davichi, and Skull for teaming up with Duble Sidekick, the mastermind behind 2012's runaway summer smash "Loving U" for an eighties-inspired surf-pop song. "Bikini" plays on a lot of the same tropes that made "Loving U" work- from a similar structure right down to the beachy sound effects, but the throwback style is a fresh twist on things.
Part of the fun of this being a collaboration single by performers with such varied styles is that it doesn't sound like anything T-ara, Davichi, or Skull would do on their own. One of the most notable things about "Bikini" is just how rich and pretty the vocals sound- with Davichi, Skull, Soyeon, and Eunjung taking the bulk of the lead vocals, the song is able to really shine in a way that it couldn't if it'd gone to a group with only one or two really strong singers. Beyond that, the song is in a rather low key compared to most girl group songs, which gives it an interesting color.
It's really a shame this song received basically a throwaway video and isn't receiving a proper promotion cycle, because it deserves to be heard. If it sells well in Korea, we may see CCM pull a "We Were In Love" and surprise us with a short promotion cycle on music shows- let's hope for the best.
