Psy's interview sparks El Monte officials to reconsider the firing of 14 lifeguards

On the 7th, lifeguards from El Monte, California, uploaded a video called "Lifeguard Style" parodying Psy's "Gangnam Style". The video was filmed during their breaks and after the pool was closed to the public, however, the 14 lifeguards were fired because they used public property for personal reasons and filmed the music video with the uniform that contained the El Monte city logo.

Much of the public who heard the news opposed the firing, citing unfair treatment. Nearly 14,000 people signed an online petition and Psy himself publicly talked in favor of the lifeguards in an interview with MTV on the 15th. On the 19th, NBC reported Psy's interview in detail along with the request for the 14 to be reinstated. In response, the mayor of El Monte said, "A decision will be made after the city has concluded their review of the case."

NBC said, "The lifeguard firing situation is because of the gap between the new generation that enjoys parody videos and the established generation that doesn't understand it." The reporter closed the report by saying, "The entire world is watching, so I hope you make a wise decision."
