Singer Baek Ji Young recently revealed how she came about in achieving her distinctive husky vocal tone. While many viewers expected the usual story of the singer's hard work, passion and dedication to be the reason, Baek, instead, shared a rather comical one.
"My voice wasn't always this husky. In fact, my voice used to be rather soft and sweet," says the singer on the latest episode of SBS 'Go Show'.
"Then one night, my classmates and I played a game against students from another major to see which of us could drink the most," says the singer, "Knowing my personality, I was set on winning the game. The rules were that each of us would drink as much as we could, and whoever had the most empty bottles by the end of the night would win."
"Others were sly and drank half while spilling half, but I drank everything. I ended up drinking about 40 glasses. I came in third place and received a clock stamped with my school's logo as my prize," continued Baek, "I vomited a lot that night. That's when my voice became husky. I'm not even kidding."
"I went to the hospital after a few days because my voice wasn't getting better. It turns out the stomach acid had damaged my vocal cords. I consistently received treatments. It was extremely husky before, but it's gotten a lot better since then."
