Last night was the 2009 University Music Festival (?????), an annual event in which bands from various universities compete for the title of number one band of the year. It has been held since 1977 and many famous artists have debuted through this festival (Kim Dong Ryul, Shin Hae Chul, Yoon Jong Shin to name a few). This year's winner was band from Ewha Woman's University called "I'm a woman who graduated from Ewha" (? ???? ???, a famous line from the movie ??) with a song titled "No crane among chickens" (????, ????). After they were announced as this year's top band, one would think they would be the most talked about band from the festival. Unfortunately for them that wasn't the case, instead of their name, hip-hop group Leessang's song Clown (??) hit number 1 as the most searched phrase on both portal sites Daum and Naver... So what happened? Well, apparently the main melody of the winning song "No crane among chickens" is very similar to that of "Clown." I've uploaded a 'comparison file' that someone created. So, what are your thoughts after listening to it? Caught red handed or another victim of Korean Netizens eager for their next victim? Personally, I am very sad. Over the last few years, University Music Fair has lost its reputation as source of the most creative and talented young artists due to decreased interest in bands and increased interest in idols, and now this plagiarism controversy hurts their reputation even more.
