Choi Ye Na personally opens up about why her album's title track is named "Hate Rodrigo"

AKP STAFF

Ahead of her comeback with a new single album 'HATE XX,' Choi Ye Na found herself in hot water after netizens and fans expressed discomfort with the provocative title of Choi Ye Na's title song "Hate Rodrigo," blatantly naming singer Olivia Rodrigo.

On June 27 at 4 PM KST, Choi Ye Na held a release showcase for her second single, 'HATE XX' at the Blue Square Mastercard Hall, in Yongsan, Seoul. During the showcase event, Choi Ye Na introduced her new music and personally explained why she named the track, "Hate Rodrigo.

She began by sharing, "'HATE XX' includes a total of three tracks - 'BAD HOBBY', 'WICKED LOVE' and 'Hate Rodrigo.' And they are the tracks that capture the emotional changes and Ye Na's unique bright energy."

Regarding the controversy over the track "Hate Rodrigo," Choi Ye Na explained, "It's a song that expresses the very cute jealousy I feel for my role model, the person who I admire and respect. It's a song that expresses that cute jealousy through my own charms without any hate. The track is characterized by interesting lyrics and a rock melody. My best friend, (G)I-DLE's Yuqi is featured on the song so it's really, really special."

When asked why she mentioned Olivia Rodrigo in the title, Choi Ye Na explained, "'Hate Rodrigo is a song that cutely and honestly expresses the feelings towards a person who is the subject of envy and sometimes jealousy. I wanted to use ironic expressions to express my desires and affections for that person through sincere lyrics and performances."

How could anybody not have guessed right away that it was going to be a love letter track? Seriously.

The song is fun. The only problem with it is that it requires the listener to not be looking for problems all the time and to not be offended over imagined non existent issues, which ofc makes it not suitable for a kpop audience.

For everyone else that is sensible and not obsessed with making everything 'problematic', it's a cool comeback with a catchy song that has it's own vibe.. Well worth checking out (don't let the drama addicts put you off).
