Song Joong Ki talked about how he first learned about the film's actual location, Japan's Hashima Island. He said, "I honestly didn't know much about Hashima Island as well as the historical background. I only picked up a few points from 'Infinity Challenge.'"
He went on, "Since the film was based on actual events, I studied a lot. I was embarrassed for not knowing about the history."

Veteran director Ryu Seung Wan commented, "It is a story based on factual occurrences. I wanted to illustrate the background of that time period as well as the physical space, making it as realistic as possible."
'Battleship Island' paints the emotional and painful story regarding comfort women during World War II. Right after reading the script, So Ji Sub and Song Joong Ki agreed to hop on board. The film is expected to be on a grand scale with a production budget of approximately 21 million USD, set to hit theaters this summer.
