10. Orange Caramel "Catallena"
Agency: Pledis Entertainment
Release Date: March 11, 2014
At first glance, the unexpected sushi girls concept might get us thinking, "Wow, they must really want to stand out." However, after we dig deeper into the MV, it's easy to see that their concept nor the outfits were just randomly pieced together. In particular, the part where the girls are sealed inside the packaging and on sale in a 3-for-1 deal alludes to the short expiration date that idol groups have nowadays. The MV comically illustrates the harsh and fiercely competitive K-Pop industry where each idol group has to work hard so they don't get 'eaten up.'
09. Soyu x JungGiGo "Some"
Agency: Starship Entertainment
Release Date: February 2, 2014
The MV is adorable, fun, and it explains the agony and painful experience of being in a 'some' relationship. If that was the producer's goal, then he/she succeeded because the MV is absolutely delightful and aesthetically pleasing. The synergy between Dasom and Baro is surprisingly refreshing, which adds to the overall quality of the video.
08. K.Will "Day 1"
Agency: Starship Entertainment
Release Date: June 5, 2014
K.Will transforms into a radio host, giving advice to his young listeners who are struggling to get noticed by their crush. Actor Park Min Woo becomes the shy and innocent boy who is in love with Soyu, the most perfect girl in his eyes. Park Min Woo lingers around Soyu and tries to grab her attention, failing each time. This is an adorable story of Park Min Woo going through the various phases of having a crush on someone.
07. Sweet Sorrow "Pounding Heart"
Agency: LOEN Entertainment
Release Date: June 1, 2014
Any stop-motion type of music video is impressive. Especially the ones that are drawn out by hand like Sweet Sorrow's "Pounding Heart." The MV illustrates the progression of the song as well as the happy progression of two people in love with musical notes and simple drawings. You can see the long hours of work that was put into creating this video, especially for the person illustrating the MV.
06. Roy Kim "Home"
Agency: CJ E&M
Release Date: October 7, 2014
"Home" shows people of all ages and in different walks of life finding comfort in the little things and especially each other. At times, it's hard to see the simple things in life that will make you happy when you are too busy focusing on your goals and dreams. Through "Home," Roy Kim reminds us that home is much closer than you think, comforting our weary hearts with warm sounds and even warmer footage.
05. Ji Eun "Don't Look At Me Like That"
Agency: TS Entertainment
Release Date: September 23, 2014
Ji Eun's "Don't Look At Me Like That" really tugs at the heart firstly with the shocking image of Ji Eun chained like an animal and secondly with the eerie ending in which the idol walks out, passing by dead bodies. Large portion of the fans speculated that the MV was about same-sex couples and that, at times, they are taunted by others and 'stared' at because they are considered different.
04. B2ST " No more"
Agency: Cube Entertainment
Release Date: June 9, 2014
B2ST was successful in almost everything they did last year. The MV for "No More," while simple, shows a lot of creativity by utilizing the popular Instagram app to show how a man and woman who have now separated try to move on while facing constant reminders of each other through constant picture updates and notifications. It touches upon society nowadays in that people are in constant contact with one another whether they desire it or not.
03. Epik High "Born Hater"
Agency: YG Entertainment
Release Date: October 18, 2014
By far, one of the best MVs to release in the year 2014. Full of meaning and word play, "Born Hater" was a true masterpiece. There are two ways to interpret the concept of the MV: first is the fans' interpreation that it has to do with the seven deadly sins, and second is what the artists actually revealed it to be, which was that each rapper represents the haters they have in their individual shots. Whichever light you see the MV in, the MV is equally great.
02. 2NE1 "Come Back Home"
Agency: YG Entertainment
Release Date: March 2, 2014
Like many MVs that YG Entertainment releases, the quality of 2NE1's "Come Back Home" was phenomenal. From the realistic yet futuristic world that they created to the little details included in each scene, it was all enough to pique the interest of the viewers. The CG during their sudden dubstep break down is creative and inspiring.
01. Akdong Musician "Melted"
Agency: YG Entertainment
Release Date: April 14, 2014
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Akdong Musician's "Melted" placed first in the list of top 50 MVs list. Aside from the phenomenal overall quality, "Melted" has a poignant storyline that hits you right in the feels. It's the story of a young vagabond boy who wanders around trying to pursue his dream of being a photographer. However, the young boy soon finds out that the world is not as welcoming as it seemed and is treated coldly throughout his journey. To our relief, there is a happier twist to the narrative as the young boy finally meets a friendly stranger who helps 'melt' his frozen heart.
