News is out that tvN's popular drama 'Reply 1997' will be airing in Japan soon. Plans are under way by CJ E&M, the managing company behind channel tvN, to arrange an air date for 'Reply 1997' with their subsidiary company Mnet Japan. This will be a different method than previous Korean dramas, which were usually exported overseas to air in Japan through just cable or Hallyu-centric channels.
The fact that 'Reply 1997' is starring popular girl group A Pink's Eunji and Seo In Guk is drawing interest and expectations, for Korean drama 'Love Rain', which recently aired in Japan (starring Jang Geun Suk and Girls Generation's YoonA) had Seo In Guk in a supporting role, previously acquainting him with the Japanese audience.
It has also been revealed that subtitles will be used in preference to dubbing for 'Reply 1997' to retain the quirkiness and fresh appeal of the dialect (satoori) used in the drama. The only concern is whether the Japanese audience will be able the relate to the 1997 scenarios of Korea in the same nostalgic way that the Korean audience has reacted.
