allkpop TV Guide and Ratings (01/23-01/29)

Posted by kdramacrazy1 pt Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Welcome to another edition of 'allkpop TV guide and Ratings', an exclusive feature that spotlights popular Korean dramas. It will discuss ratings for each week's episodes, as well as provide brief recaps (with spoilers, so watch out!) of shows that we know allkpop readers are enjoying.

We've got the two regular shows being recapped for this week — 'The Moon that Embraces the Sun' (starring Kim Soo Hyun, Han Ga In, Jung Il Woo) and 'Wild Romance' (starring Lee Si Young, Lee Dong Wook, SNSD's Jessica).

———–

Now that KBS's medical drama 'Brain' has completed its run, the race for viewer ratings was left to MBC's 'Light and Shadow' and SBS's 'History of a Salaryman'. 'Light and Shadow' became the new ruler of the Monday-Tuesday prime time with a rating of 20.2%, while 'History of a Salaryman' was able to springboard to double digits, thereby achieving a healthy 12.8%.

However, with 'Dream High 2' coming on board, we'll have to see how this teen drama will change up the game.

Meanwhile, MBC's 'The Moon that Embraces the Sun' continues its reign as it broke the 30% mark with its highest rating yet (31.7%). Thanks to its star-studded cast, thrilling plot, and saeguk appeal, the drama is consistently on an upward trend, leaving virtually no doubt that 'Moon-Sun' will hold the crown till it concludes its broadcast.

As for KBS's 'Wild Romance', the series welcomed SNSD's Jessica into the cast, but the idol's star appeal wasn't enough to push the ratings to double digits. Sure, netizens went wild over Jessica's appearance, but their enthusiasm hardly seemed to affect TV viewers. The drama ultimately achieved a low rating of 6.2%.

Rounding out this prime time slot is SBS's 'Take Care of Us, Captain', which seems to have lowered to a 7.1% rating.

It looks like as 'Moon-Sun' continues to bring in more viewers, 'Wild Romance' and 'Take Care of Us, Captain' are being left in the dust.

? The Moon that Embraces the Sun (MBC)

Official Synopsis: 'The Moon That Embraces The Sun' tells of the strong love between 'King Lee Hwon' (Kim Soo Hyun) and a female shaman named 'Wol' (Han Ga In). Wol was born from a noble family and was slated to become Hwon's queen, but a nasty game of politics resulted in her 'death'. She is rescued but without her memories as a court lady, and so she's brought up to be a shaman. Years later, King Lee Hwon and Wol meet again, but how will their love story unfold...?

Recap of Ep. 7-8: Episode 7 begins with Wol's momentary encounter with the King, which is enough to bring tears to her eyes. She's later besieged by memories from her past as 'Yeon Woo', but she doesn't understand where these memories are coming from. King Hwon and Woon escape to the woods to elude a spy, but find themselves lost in a forest. Enter Wol, whose cottage with the other shamans is nearby. (You can read the rest of the scene synopsis here). To wrap up this episode, Wol gets kidnapped by the Queen Dowager's minions. She gets shoved into a small travelling space, which triggers memories of her time in the coffin. "Whose memories are these?", she gasps.

Moving onto Episode 8, Wol is brought to the palace as a human talisman for the King. His longing for Yeon Woo reduces his vital life force, and so Wol is given the responsibility of watching over the King as he sleeps. Her presence seems to work, as the King wakes up every morning, bright and full of youthful energy.

One night, she touches his forehead and flashes of her childhood pass before her eyes. The King wakes up and reflexively pins Wol to his mattress, yelling, "Who are you? Tell me!"

Recap of Ep. 7-8: Moo Yul's skirmish results in a scandal that disqualifies him as a player, thus destroying his career and dreams as a baseball player. Moo Yul disappears from his home, leaving Eun Jae and his friends in a state of worry as they frantically search for him and try to rescind Moo Yul's disqualification. With Reporter Go's help, Eun Jae and Dong Soo (Oh Man Seok) are able to help Moo Yul return to his baseball career.

While Eun Jae is thrilled that she and Moo Yul are becoming closer, her happiness gets clouded by the return of Moo Yul's ex-girlfriend, Jong Hee (SNSD's Jessica). As Moo Yul becomes enamored again by Jong Hee's charms, Eun Jae becomes increasingly jealous...
